New Star is the American University of Central Asia’s student newspaper. Student newspapers are uncommon in Central Asia, but are a regular feature of academic life in American liberal arts colleges and universities. They are an important space for freedom of speech.
At our department, New Star is not only an important space for freedom of speech, but also for journalistic practice. As part of our internship program, JMC students must write 10 articles for the newspaper during their second year.
The newspaper is also managed by our department, and hence especially lucky JMC students can gain managerial experience by being selected for the New Star editorial staff, which includes regular reporters, proofreaders, a managing editor and an editor-in-chief.
