MINOR REQUIREMENTS

The Department of Journalism and Mass Communications (JMC) offers a minor degree for the students of other departments. The minor provides basic skills in writing and editing news and features for print and online media, as well as an introduction to the basic skills for video and audio editing necessary for the practice of the field.

Students may apply for the minor degree in Journalism and Mass Communications after completing the first year of study. Students must maintain GPA 2.7 and higher.

To earn the minor degree in Journalism and Mass Communications, students must complete a total of 42 credits from JMC.

In addition to completing a total of 42 credits in Journalism and Mass Communications courses, students are required to submit a portfolio consisting of at least five (5) publications in the New Star newspaper or in other media.

Required Courses for the Minor (30 credits):

  • MC 190: Introduction to Mass Communication (6) (Fall Semester)
  • MC 235.1: Newswriting  Skills  I and II (12) (Fall and Spring Semester)
  • Multimedia  Skills I and II (12) (Fall and Spring Semester)

Elective Courses for the Minor (12 credits):

  • Choose one elective journalism course at the 100 or 200 level (6)
  • Choose one elective journalism course at the 300 or 400 level (6)

Total:  Required Courses (30 credits) + Minor Electives (12 credits) = 42 credits

 

A student has signed Declaration of a Minor document from the Chair of the Major department and got approval from the Chair of the Minor department

Information about minor requirements will be updated. The required and elective courses would probably be decreased from 42 to 30.
